Egypt's Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts on Monday unveiled nine paintings made by Polish artists who were in the military and spent time in Egypt during World War II.
Egyptian officials and a Polish delegation that came especially for the event have inaugurated the exhibition, dubbed "Polish Conscript Artists. Egypt 1941-1946".
The paintings were "discovered by chance" in the Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts 10 years ago, said Ali Saeed, the director of the museum.
He said the Polish side took care of documenting and restoring the artworks before exhibiting them in a collaboration with the museum.
Saeed said only three artists out of the four were identified: Józef Jerema (1900 - 1974), Edward Matuszczak (1906 - 1965) and Kordian Józef Zamorski (1890 - 1983).
Jarosław Sellin, Secretary of State of Poland's Ministry of Culture and National Heritage:
"We have arrived today from Poland as a delegation from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage to open the special exhibition that is dedicated to the Polish painters who lasted here during the Second World War, spent very time here during the Second World War, and amongst them were many well-talented painters and artists."
